The National Council on Radiation Protection and Measurement has announced that Americans are exposed to seven times more radiation from medical imaging tests than they were in 1980. People seem to agree that these diagnostic tests are needed in many cases and often prevent patients from having to undergo exploratory surgery. But critics fear that doctors are overusing them. The result is increased healthcare costs and patients that are exposed to unnecessarily high doses of radiation.
According to the Government Accountability Office, the amount of money that Medicare spent on medical imaging doubled during the period from 2000 to 2006 to about $14 billion.
